FRAY-texture

Fray

“Fray” is closely related to the word friction, because both have as a common ancestor the Latin "fricāre," meaning to rub. For our purposes, "fray" refers to the beauty of rustic imperfection and aged patinas in both nature and craft.

The consequents of age are glorified with organic shapes, raw edges, weathered surfaces, worn textiles and washed-out colors. Influenced by ideas that range from wabi-sabi to shabby chic, the spirit is more rebellious than reductive. Relying heavily on neutral tones to set the stage, varied hues of denim, dusty rose, mossy green and old gold dominate.

The security of home provides an emotional and physical haven from our new world of imminent danger. Gently-aged textures, recycled patterns and comforting colors provide a calming effect during times of uncertainty. The palette, composed of mostly warmtones, is tempered by the familiar blues of indigo and cobalt.

META-texture

Meta

“Meta” comes from the Greek word for beyond, after or behind. The “beyond” sense of meta still lingers in words like metaphysics or meta-economy. Today, “meta” is a prefix meaning more comprehensive or transcending.

The quest for meaning often peaks during uncertain times, leading to a rise in spiritualism, blended beliefs and faith—with subsequent expressions of ritual, both literal and symbolic. This transcendent theme prompts a range of liturgically based purples and wines, Zen-inspired blues, mystical metallics and a base of meditative neutrals.

CAMP-texture

Camp

“Camp” is something so outrageously artificial, affected, inappropriate or out of date as to be considered amusing. This creative expression is absurdly exaggerated and often fuses elements of high and popular culture.

Bold and playful with a total disregard for conventional restriction, this polychromatic color party combines a vibrant rainbow of primaries with complex tones to produce irony and wit. Carefree combinations of random motifs and wacky patterns intentionally break the rules to amplify the quest for personal expression and frivolity.

Nature remains our most authentic source of inspiration. Looking earthward for its intrinsic celebration of pattern and color provides a reliable recipe for design with universal appeal. Foraged pigments from the land, water and sky reflect a primal aesthetic for richly grounded neutrals, atmospheric blues and verdant greens.

BRUT-texture

Brut

"Brutalism” is a style of architecture or art characterized by a deliberate plainness, crudity, or violence of imagery. It was first applied to functionalist buildings of the 1950s and 1960s that used steel and concrete in starkly massive blocks.

The contrasts of static versus fluid, hard versus soft and masculine versus feminine are exaggerated in this alternative expression of neo-goth style. Delicate pastels with a tinge of artifice battle the primitive tones of brutalist and industrial hues of charcoal, gray and brown to create a reactive world of calculated tension.
